What Exactly Is Bandwidth?

Aponet's Bandwidth-Manager allows ISPs to monitor and limit the bandwidth usage of each web-hosting customer who may have one IP address or a group of IP addresses. With Aponet's Bandwidth-Manager, we can assure our customers they're getting every bit of bandwidth they're paying for, informed the Chief Technology Officer of Genuity Inc. a national ISP providing high-reliability, high-performance web-hosting and networking services. We have been searching for superior tools to partition shared bandwidth, and this is the best product available today that meets this need. It helps us to understand Bandwidth What Is It? Aponet's Bandwidth-Manager not only allows web-hosting ISPs to provide the quality of service their customers demand, it also allows them to bill a customer based on their actual bandwidth usage stated the president and CEO of Aponet. Bandwidth is a major cost to an ISP. Using Aponet's Bandwidth-Manager, ISPs can properly manage their bandwidth costs. The return on their investment on this product can be as short as one to two months. Aponet Bandwidth-Manager is a combined hardware and software solution designed to measure, limit and report on bandwidth utilization by hosts running IP protocol in an Ethernet environment. It can be used to channelize the Ethernet bandwidth among different customers. The product receives an Ethernet packet from either the server or the network and passes it on to either the network or the server respectively. It calculates the real-time bandwidth usage of IP traffic of each customer specified and ignores all non- IP traffic. The bandwidth is calculated as number of bits sent or received per second. In today's competitive environment, instant access to timely information can be critical, stated president of Aponet. The Aponet Bandwidth-Manager enables real-time information to be accessed from anywhere on the Internet to provide ISPs with the ability to allocate and manage bandwidth between their web-hosting customers thereby maximizing their investment and planning for future growth. Rich Functionality Combined With Ease of Use A key feature of the Aponet Bandwidth-Manager is that it brings network bandwidth management control to the Ethernet and router levels. This pioneering technology brings the flow control mechanism found at the Frame Relay and ATM level, down to the Ethernet and router configuration. This includes the ability to assign a maximum bandwidth to up to 20,000 individual IP addresses or groups of addresses that can be defined by the ISP. In addition, a default bandwidth can be assigned to all IP addresses not specified. This is useful for granting either full Ethernet access speed or a lower bandwidth access to all IP addresses other than the one listed. Alternatively, an ISP can offer the option of allowing customers to burst beyond their allocated limit if there is bandwidth available. This is similar to the Variable Bit Rate found in ATM. The administrator can specify the maximum burst rate in addition to the allocated bandwidth limit, which is equivalent to Constant Bit Rate in ATM technology. They are extremely useful for both ISPs and their customers in analyzing web site access patterns and for bandwidth provisioning planning. |
